The Inner Game of Fortnite – Only Take Snipes That You Can Hit
If you watch Twitch, you’ve probably heard your favorite streamer hit some low probability snipe and exclaim, “Yeah, we hit those.” And sure, sometimes we do hit those. But most of the time we don’t. I carry a sniper to take shots I know I can hit, not cross-map gambles that will alert a whole bunch of people to my position.
You know YouTube trickshot videos where people shoot basketballs in insane ways and make them in hoops that are either awkwardly placed or really far away? Or when the Driftboard came out and people were posting backflip snipe videos? Do you know how many attempts it took to get that clip? I don’t either. A lot, probably. When you edit them all together in a montage that makes you look like the next member of the Harlem Globetrotters, it’s easy to think that everyone’s “hitting those” but you’re not. They’re not either. Trust me.
In early November we talked about probabilities and the mid-game. Consider this edition part of that lesson. Carrying a sniper is great, but wait until you have a clear shot of someone who isn’t moving or someone who’s moving predictably before you take your shot.
Don’t shoot at two people mid-build fight hoping for the best. The best case scenario is that you pick off one player, alerting the other one to your position and they start pushing you. The worst case - and most likely case - is that you miss, alerting both of them and anyone else who happens to be considering third partying their fight to your spot on the map.
Remember, we don’t need to play like streamers. They’re playing to entertain. We’re playing to win.
Take smart fights, smart shots, and don’t give yourself up when you don’t have to.
The Sub-Skill Drills – Stair Edit Shots
For today’s drill, we’re going to practice using stairs we’re standing on as a buffer for taking shotgun shots:
First, hop into Creative.
Place a stair and get on top of it.
Stand on one side of the stair and edit it so you fall through.
Quickly switch to your shotgun and take a shot at an imaginary player who’s chilling under your stair.
Immediately after you take the shot, jump, close and confirm the edit, so you’re back on top of your stair, safe from their return shot.
Do that a bunch in Creative, 5-10 minutes.
Then go into a game and try to get a kill or two that way.
This should make it easier when you’re in a build fight and you ramp over someone to drop down, take a shot, and then get back up to safety!
