The Inner Game of Fortnite – Follow Through On Your Building
I remember my dad when I was little, coaching me in basketball and baseball, telling me to follow through on my shot and when I swung my bat. Whether it was my back hand moving forward to press the basketball off my left hand and then continuing forward or making sure my bat came all the way across the right side of my body (I’m a lefty), the instruction was the same: continue your momentum for maximum power in your shot.
One thing I see from a lot of players do (and I do myself sometimes is when I’m building against another opponent): we stop building too early. We stop when we’re on the same level so that we can try to take a shot. Usually what happens in this situation is that our opponents keep building and then have height on us, a much cleaner headshot, and we’re playing at a disadvantage.
I’m not recommending you do crazy high ground retakes like you see in YouTube videos. I’m just suggesting that you build one or two levels higher than you think you need to, every time.
The worst thing that happens is you lose your opponent in the structure if they drop down or hide out in the middle. If that happens, you slow down and let them come to you. More than likely, they’ll stop and you’ll have an advantage on them, where you can edit or drop down with a clear headshot and take them out.
Like you’d follow through on your free throw, follow through on your builds. If you want to stop, do another 90 or two to get that extra height. Build to dominate your opponent, not just match them face-to-face on another level.
Try this in a few games, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Sub-Skill Drills – Non-ADS Close Range Fights
This Sub-Skill Drill is going to be done entirely in Team Rumble. Most fights in Fortnite happen in close quarters and we want as much mobility as possible in a tight space. Aiming down sights trades our mobility for more focused aim. So let’s practice our aim without losing our mobility!
Pick up a shotgun and an SMG.
Practice taking every one of your fights shooting from the hip, aiming for the upper torso and head of your enemies. Try as best as you can not to ADS.
Get as many elims as you can over two games (goal being 10-30 elims), practicing keeping your crosshairs on your enemies and tracking their movements without aiming down your sights.
For bonus points, try crouching and standing as you fire from the hip, your enemies will more than likely shoot over your header.
